GDC2009: Officially Shitting Bricks RIGHT NOW

by Glenn Fiedler on March 19, 2009

lots and lots of bricks

Checked the calendar today, I fly out to GDC this sunday, for some reason I thought I had a week more than I did. Oh man.

Well I have my final talk layout done, and the demo is nearly finished – but I’m still scared shitless. Why?

I guess it’s always difficult to talk in front of an audience of 500 people, no matter how hard you prepare… there is always more you feel you can do. Oh and even better, my talk is 9AM friday, which means I’m get to stay in this awesome scared shitless state ALL WEEK LONG, meaning I’ll spend most of my time in sanfran practicing and preparing my talk in my hotel room. Argh.

Oh, and that previous post I gave about how to prepare a talk for GDC?

Forget everything I said and buy this book.

Good luck then :) Judging by your past lectures, it should be good.

Hmm from looking at the picture maybe there is money to be made from shitting bricks. Hmmmm /me wonders of pondering

the important part is not the monetary value of the bricks, but the sheer quantity of them :)

I just watched your GDC talk on the official GDC ’09 DVD. You did awesome. This is the most directly applicable and clearly explained talk I’ve heard so far from this year’s GDC.

Also, I can relate to the early part of your story. I’m a game programmer just out of college and am quickly realizing just how competitive this industry is. Fear of failure is an issue for me. Your story was strangely comforting though. I mean you may have chalked up a painful list of failures and mistakes, but at least you’ve pushed yourself as hard as you can again and again. That’s inspiring to me, regardless of whether you met some deadline or not. Keep pushing it man; and I will too.

thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it – you know you only see the glittering successes, the halos, the gears of wars, the bioshocks, but very rarely do you get a glimpse into the “almost famous” and that’s me.

but it’s looking up, 3 months after quitting pandemic to work on my demo, I started work at sony santa monica.

sony rocks! it’s the best time of my life and i get to go to work everyday and work with a fantastic team.

even better, i’m working on something so incredibly cool and secret, i can’t even tell you what team i’m on! :)

so keep on trying mate. yes it’s hard and you might fuck up here and there, but keep at it and it’ll all come good in the end

good luck!
