Ok so i’ve been sneaking out of work at lunch and around dinner time to play this at best buy for a week on the 360 version, finally caved in last and purchased the ps2 version last night, went home and played through it on expert to the end (yes i’m a freak)
The best thing about this is that the note matching algorithm is *vastly* superior to GH1/GH2
Basically, if you make the basic shape of the solo, you get it – its very forgiving on timing, *to a point*. i really feel that they’ve nailed the right amount of rythmic stretch and squeeze you can do to sequences because you can still mess it up (pretty easily), but you nail it more often than not — using this then to ratchet up the difficulty of solos in the endgame is genius.
Can i just say that playing cliffs of dover on expert @ ***** is a gift from heaven? i’d have paid the price for this entire game just to play this song with the new note matching algorithm. this is easily the highlight of the entire GH series for me.
love the 50, 100, 200 note streaks also
now the bad:
- cant stand the boss battles. just blew through them on expert without really understanding how it worked. winning seems an accident. i really hate that it *disrupts* your play when you have to hit the whammy or a note to recover. GH is all about focus. anything that breaks this ruins the experience for me
- not a fan of the song selection for the first 1/2 of the game. too easy. really only 5-6 songs interesting enough solos enough on expert to keep me interested, mostly in the last 3rd of the game:
+ cliffs of dover (+++)
+ cult of personality (main riff in this is just a joy to play)
+ cherub rock (chordy fun)
+ cydonia (shows off the easier fast rep notes, contrast with “misirlou”/gh2 (sp?) to see how much they are now)
+ my name is jonas (fun solo, interesting chording reps)
+ number of the beast (666)? i forget — *great solos and chording* ![]()
+ the metal (such a fun riff to play, nice fiddly solo bits)
+ black magic woman (just a great feel, i dont like to whammy held star power notes in this, its like sacrilege…)
not a fan of “one”, because much like freebird, its too long and simple most of the way through the song, so frustrating to play (takes so long to get to the interesting bit), and that solo burst with the three note hammer on rep is virtually impossible to actually hit (need to star power through it.) no other point in the game do i need to actually use star power to get through a section, and it pisses me off =)
guitar hero vs. rock band? i think they are going to be in competition for a while.
i think rock band is going to have a better overall selection of songs.
lets see if rock band can match cliffs of dover
final thing i will say here, if the rock band note matching is a step back from the GH3 algorithm — its going to be a real shame. harmonix, i sincerely hope you rewrote it from scratch this time around
thats it!
ps. did i mention i really love the note streaks?

Sorry this is unrelated… what happened to the cool applets that used to be on gaffer.org in tinyptc ?
I’m thinking of doing some music visualisation stuff, and they looked like a good place to start

hi Glenn,
i have followed most of your articles especially which related to Game Programming.
i can do little programming but i am not really good at physics.
i am looking forward if you can come out with a simple flight simulation tutorial and sample code.
i always wanted to create a simple flight simulator game but flight dynamics seems too hard for me.
i hope u can give some sample. thanx.
